In a significant move toward algorithmic transparency, Meta’s Threads platform is rolling out a suite of new features designed to give users more visibility into how their content is moderated and distributed on the platform.

The most notable addition is an “Account Status” dashboard that will inform users when their posts have been demoted or restricted, according to an announcement from Instagram head Adam Mosseri. This feature represents a shift toward greater transparency in content moderation practices that have often been criticized for their opacity across social media platforms.

“We’re starting to roll out Account Status on Threads, which helps you understand if your posts are eligible to be recommended to people who don’t follow you,” Mosseri explained in a post on Threads. The dashboard will specifically notify users if their content has been demoted for violating platform guidelines, providing clarity on distribution limitations.

This development comes as Meta continues to build out Threads as a competitive alternative to X (formerly Twitter), which has faced its own controversies around content moderation under Elon Musk’s ownership.

According to Engadget, the Account Status feature will provide users with information about whether their posts are eligible for recommendation to non-followers. If content has been demoted, users will receive notification through the dashboard, along with guidance on how to appeal such decisions.

The Verge reports that Meta is also testing video ads on Threads, signaling the platform’s maturation and Meta’s intent to monetize the growing service. This comes as Threads has steadily expanded its feature set since launching in July 2023.

Beyond the Account Status dashboard, Meta is introducing several other user-requested features. According to Social Media Today, these include interest indicators that will help users discover content aligned with their preferences, and spoiler tags that allow users to hide potentially sensitive content.

“You can now add spoiler tags to your posts on Threads,” noted Threads user @jackteachesfinance in a post demonstrating the feature. This addition allows users to shield content that might contain spoilers for movies, TV shows, or other media, requiring readers to opt in to view the hidden material.

Gadgets360 reports that the Account Status feature is gradually rolling out to users globally, though the timeline for complete deployment remains unclear. The publication notes that this feature mirrors similar transparency tools already available on Instagram.

Meta’s push for greater transparency comes amid ongoing scrutiny of social media algorithms and their impact on public discourse. By providing users with more information about content distribution decisions, Threads appears to be positioning itself as a more transparent alternative in the social media landscape.
